A Beginner’s Guide to Building a Gaming PC

Now that the pandemic has given people no choice but to stay at home most times, many are becoming more unmotivated every day. Some cities don’t allow people to go outside for too long unless they’re buying food and other necessities. Browsing through funny YouTube videos or scrolling down on social media isn’t cutting it anymore.

Many have decided to get a custom-built PC to get rid of the extreme boredom at home. There are many things you can do with a high-end PC at home. You can run the latest software and video games without having to experience lag or frame rate issues. And when it’s time to work, opening multiple programs won’t be a problem for the PC.

Why Choose a Desktop Over a Laptop?

Before buying a custom-built PC or a laptop, you need to determine what you’re going to use it for. Some prefer to use a laptop over a PC because they can carry it around wherever they go. But a high-end desktop has a lifespan of about five years or more depending on how you take care of it, while the laptop has a shorter lifespan.

Due to the unpredictable events forcing many to stay home, desktops can be a much preferable option compared to a laptop. Also, a high-end desktop is relatively cheaper than a high-end laptop.

The reason for laptops being absurdly more expensive than desktops is its portability. You can get a high-performance custom-built PC for less than a medium to a high-end laptop.

The Essential Components of a System Unit

To ensure you get the best custom-built PC, you have to determine the system unit’s components. There are nine components that are essential to a system unit.

  • Motherboard

This is the core component of a system unit. You attach most electrical components to the motherboard. You can find slots for the processor, memory, and adapter cards.

  • Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The CPU is the brain of the computer. It carries out and interprets basic instructions for the entire computer to function correctly. Nowadays, the best CPU for gaming and heavy-duty software is an i7 quad-core to enable faster processing and avoid long loading times.

  • Random Access Memory (RAM)

Aside from the CPU, the RAM also determines how fast your PC’s performance will be. Most gaming PCs need to have at least 8GB of RAM to ensure a smooth gaming experience. Anything lower than 8GB RAM is not advised on a gaming PC.

  • Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)

Also known as a video card, this further enhances the graphics of the game you’re playing. Even with the CPU’s integrated graphics, it cannot run high-end games without a dedicated GPU.

  • Solid State Drive (SSD)

Most system units built for gaming have an SSD because of its superior speed compared to an HDD. An SSD is also smaller than an HDD, making more room inside the system unit.

  • Power Supply Unit

Your entire PC can never turn on without a power supply unit. One needs to consider the output wattage, quality rating, efficiency and whether it’s modular or not.

  • System Unit Casing

All of the other components need to be installed somewhere, and that is where the casings come in. The parts are housed inside the casing and people can choose from many casing designs and sizes they want.

  • Cooling Components

The system unit is working hard to deliver you the ultimate gaming experience. Since it’s working hard, it will produce significant heat. This is why a custom-built PC will have a type of cooling component installed to prevent the parts from overheating.

Now that you have an idea about a custom-built PC, it won’t be difficult looking for the right one. There are several stores that sell custom-built PCs that are already high-end like Shopping Express.
