Essential Things You Need to Start Your Jewellery Making Journey

Some people might get interested in creating their own jewellery. They would usually start with cheap resources such as polished, gold, silver, or bronze. After a while, they acquire several skills that let them create better jewellery and soon enough, they can turn it into a profitable business. They hire workers and rent a building space where they can conduct their business.

Another essential part of their business is the crafting tools they use. Most people think that creating jewellery is done in factories where machines are constantly bending, forming, and pressing metal. This is untrue as authentic jewellery is mostly made by hand from some of the most proficient jewellery crafters. They need to use the best tools to craft the best jewellery for clients.

1. Pliers

If you are still new to crafting jewellery, the first tool you should have in your arsenal is pliers. Different types of pliers are used for jewellery, including the round nose, nylon-tipped, and flat nose pliers. The round nose is a plier that you need whenever you make jewellery with loops, bends, jump rings, and clasps.

Next is the flat nose pliers, which is one tool that you will mostly use during the process of making your jewellery. You use them to finish wire-wrapped tips, open up jump rings, and finish other tasks to form your jewellery. A good tip is to use two flat nose pliers so that you can firmly hold the jewellery and avoid crimping the metal. Flat nose pliers that have a smooth surface between its jaws is recommended.

Lastly, you will need the nylon-tipped pliers to bend wires. This form of jewellery crafting requires tons of practice to ensure the bending process goes smoothly. Some that are still new to bending metal wires will have a few kinks, but that is only natural. With constant practice, you can bend wires like a professional jeweller in no time!

2. Flush and Wire Cutters

The next thing you need for jewellery crafting is cutters. There are also two types of them, which are flush and wire cutters. Both of them are important when you need to cut many wires when learning wire-wrapping techniques. You use them the same way as a normal cutter, but this type of cutter is better at making smooth cuts. You should also keep in mind the gauge of the wire you are using. Cutting a wire that is larger than usual can damage the cutter.

3. Jeweller’s Saw

If you plan on making precise cuts that your wire cutters cannot do, you should get a jeweller’s saw to get it done. The saw can create small, complex cuts, which gives you more control over how the jewellery will shape perfectly. There are also different types of blades you use, depending on what metal you will use.

4. Rulers

A jeweller’s toolset is never complete when you do not have a ruler. You can use simple rulers as long as it can get the job done. Experienced jewellers prefer to use graphing rulers since it lets them see through the ruler and gain better visualization when shaping or cutting the metal.

If you plan to get these tools, make sure you get them from a reliable store to ensure high-quality jewellery tools. There are several well-known names like Sunset Crystals that can provide the best tools to use for jewellery making.
