Most Distinct Neighborhoods in Manhattan

Manhattan is the most densely populated New York City borough out of the five. Its gridded streets are made up of many different neighborhoods that are notable thanks to the businesses, culture, and residents within their limits.

As you look at Manhattan real estate keep these distinct communities in mind to see if where you’d like to buy is right for you.

Chelsea

Chelsea has been a haven for artists for a long time thanks to the inspiring cultural activities there as well as the architecture of many of the buildings. The high ceilings and large freight elevators are perfect for artists looking to haul their work in and out of residences and galleries.

There are over 300 art galleries in the neighborhood, as well as a good mix of shops, restaurants, and bars.

The famed Chelsea Market is here, and the area is a short walk to the Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden. High Line Park is a raised abandoned railroad track that is now rife with lush greenery.

Chelsea is on the west side of Manhattan, running from the upper 20s to 14th street and West Street to Sixth Avenue.

SoHo

Named for the area South of Houston Street (and down to Canal), this is one of the trendiest neighborhoods in the city as well as the most expensive.

SoHo has many high-end eateries and stores, with some of the best boutique shops and nicest hotels found here. There are plenty of art galleries and many of the buildings are pre-war with stunning loft views.

West Village

If you’ve ever wanted to live in Carrie Bradshaw’s neighborhood, West Village is for you.

This area in lower Manhattan has the Hudson to the west and Greenwich Avenue to the east. It’s filled with gorgeous historic architecture and tree-lined cobblestone streets.

Shops and restaurants are tucked into the streets, giving the area a quaint feeling.

Housing is scarce, so the cost of living here is high.

East Village

On the east side of lower Manhattan, this Village contains Alphabet City, Little Ukraine, and The Bowery.

It’s another attractive area for artists and has been since the 1950s due to its low cost of living. Those who lived here were historically blue collar and lower-working class. Today there’s a large immigrant population concentrated in the area, as well as students from neighboring NYU, Pratt, and The New School.

The East Village is defined as stretching from 14th Street to Houston Street and east of the Bowery and Third Avenue.

Tribeca

This lower Manhattan neighborhood stands for “Triangle Below Canal” and is very like SoHo in how trendy it is and the large price tag that comes along with that.

It was once a deserted area as it’s filled with warehouses and factories, but it has since grown in population.

It’s home to the Tribeca Film Festival, which was founded by former Tribeca resident Robert DeNiro.

Harlem

Harlem is home to one of the most culturally rich and diverse groups of folks in the city. Within is Columbia University, Manhattan School of Music, and The Apollo Theater.

This north Manhattan neighborhood was the center of the Harlem Renaissance and a hot spot for black musicians and writers.
